Will's working class background ends up clashing in various humorous ways with the upper class world of the Banks and frequently got him or other members of the family into trouble as well. Other members of the Banks family include Carlton Banks (played by Alfonso Ribeiro), Will's preppy and arrogant cousin, Hilary Banks (played by Karyn Parsons), Will's attractive but dull-witted, eldest cousin, Ashley Banks (played by Tatyana Ali), Will's youngest cousin who often looks u to Will, and Geoffrey, the family's cynical Butler. His relatives include Philip Banks (played by James Avery), Will's strict and gruff uncle, who is a successful lawyer (later Judge) and Vivian Banks (played by Janet Hubert and later by Daphne Reid), Will's no-nonsense, forthright, and career-minded aunt who is a University Professor. Assuming Will took his father's name, it wouldn't make a lot of sense for all of the sisters to take that name too.In this popular African-American sitcom, Will Smith (played by Will Smith in his first acting gig) is a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia, who is sent to live with his wealthy relatives at their Bel-Air mansion in Los Angeles, California by his mother after getting into a fight with some thugs whilst playing basketball. Interestingly, in later episodes Will's father refers to himself as 'Lou Smith'.
Throughout the show, Aunt Viv, Will's mum and the other sisters are frequently referred to as the 'Smith' sisters. However, she later reappeared as a completely different character - Will's love interest, 'Dee-Dee' - in the second. Guest star Queen Latifah portrayed Hilary's horrific boss, Marissa Redmon in the first season. Queen Latifah played two different characters. Geoffrey later explains it is a 'family name'.

'When I watch those episodes, it's disgusting. 'I would memorize the entire script, then I'd be lipping everybody's lines while they were talking,' Smith previously admitted in an interview. Will had a seriously bad lip-syncing problem.ĭuring the early seasons of the show, Will can frequently be seen miming the lines of the other actors while they were speaking.
